Emerson
Wally
Emerson has a gift for bringing out the beauty of some of Lawrence’s most
scenic areas. He developed his talents through years of photojournalist
free-lance work and began showing Haskell-Baker Wetlands and Kansas University
portfolios at Fields in October 2002.
Water stirred by a passing wind, the sun slipping down behind dark, gnarled
outlines of a tree, the vivid green of the wetlands’ growth, the majesty
of KU’s buildings framed in pure blue sky and Fall’s foliage. The way
he captures these moments is what makes his photography so memorable.
The wetlands in particular is a place of artistic inspiration for him.
“What draws me there is what draws anybody who appreciates it as a place
of natural beauty and a place for spiritual renewal,” he says. “I would
like for people to appreciate it as a precious and beautiful place that
should be preserved.”
Emerson approaches what he sees as a study in color and form as well as
content. “I like to be in a place, experience it, soak it up and then
respond to it with the tools and techniques of photography. I hope to
create something that can be enjoyed visually, be informative in a documentary
sense and perhaps even share some of the experience of being there.”
